If a Key is spawned in one-system multiplayer but no player caused it, the closest player to the location the Key spawned will be awarded it. In multiplayer, if a player dies, all Keys they are holding enter a bubble that slowly floats towards the nearest player in the Course Area. When every Pink Coin in a course is collected, a Key will be awarded to the player who collected the final Pink Coin. Course Parts with Keys inside of them cannot be placed inside a container. Blocks with Keys inside will award the Key if it is hit or destroyed. This will award the player a Key when the object is defeated (In the case of a Yoshi's Egg, when it hatches). Keys can be placed inside most Enemies, Containers, Shoe Goombas and Yoshi's Eggs. Keys are used to unlock Key Doors and Warp Boxes (With Keys), consuming the Key. The Keys a player collects are visible following behind the player. If the player collects another Key while having collected the maximum, the Key will still be collected but not kept. Players can collect a maximum of 8 Keys total, or the total number of Key Doors and Warp Boxes (With Keys) in the stage if that is less than 8. Keys can be collected by a player touching them, a Yoshi's tongue, or by Superballs.
